So, this past week I had a really interesting breakthrough with one of our pro soccer players that we deal with.

I got really excited because we MAY have just cracked the code of “getting better overnight”… (seriously!!)

Now, I’m not here to say that there’s some magic pill to take, but there is a secret formula…

This player is someone who’s about to make the jump to go to Europe (for anyone not in the soccer world, this is like going from a lesser quality league to a higher quality league).

The one issue that came up though was that he had to become more consistent!

Aka - an issue that about 99.9% of all athletes deal with…

Here was the problem though: he’s tried so many things in the past to try and get more consistent, but nothing seemed to work.

So I asked him to break down his process for me and asked him:

  • What are the 3 things on the field that make you special?

  • What mindset must you be in to be dominant?

  • What kind of work do you put in on a daily basis to be consistent?

To no surprise to me - he couldn’t get past my first question…

“What do you mean what 3 things make me special?”, he said.

I answered, “Well, you’re playing at the top level in the USA for soccer. Don’t you know what makes you special??”

He couldn’t answer.

So we broke it down and he said, “my vision, creativity, and playmaking ability.”

So I said, “Great! Now here’s the most important question: what 3 skills must you master in order to feel confident enough to do those 3 things consistently?”

He said, “Easy! My shot, speed, and passing!!”

“Great!”, I said, “Now what kind of mindset do you need to be in so that you can play without hesitation?”

He goes, “Simple: I need to know that the work I put in during the week was good work. And when I do that, I’m confident.”

“Excellent!!” I said. Then, I gave him the formula…

I said, “Ok, now that we know what you must master, we can get to work. There’s 3 things you need to do in order to master a skill: visualize (mental reps), practice that skill in isolation, and study role models who already mastered that skill.”

So, he got to work - and boy did he see results!

He was visualizing his 3 strengths for 10 reps each - sitting there and imaging himself executing them with perfection.

Then, the next 3 days at practice, he worked on those skills for 10 minutes each after he was done training with his team. And he did it at game intensity.

Finally, he studied his role models 3 times per week and learned how they used their shot, speed, and passing to create opportunities for themselves.

And that’s when it happened - game day.

That game, he scored a goal against one of the top teams in the league and led his team.

After the game he texted me, “Matt, it’s like I got better over night. In 3 days, I was able to turn it around…”

And this happened with many youth athletes we’ve worked with, and pro athletes we’ve worked with.

It’s fool proof.

It’s the cracked code that no one follows.

But you can be one of them.

Follow this same process, and I promise you’ll get the same results.
