This email is probably one of the realest, and best, examples I can show you of what it really means to “stack days.”
I feel like so many online gurus talk about it, but when it comes to actually putting it into practice, they break at the first sign of adversity.
This past week I was speaking with one of our NFLer’s who just started preseason camp - and this isn’t just any NFLer - this is a man who has a real chance at being a Pro Bowler this year.
Aka - he’s one of the best of the best.
Naturally, expectations were high coming into day one - he wants to dominate and put in a lot of work in the offseason.
I texted him after day one - “How’d it go?”
He replied, “Man, lots of work to do.”
I’ll be honest - even I was a bit shocked when he said this because he had me believing he was going to crush it from day 1!
But that’s when it brought me back to my philosophy of stacking progress each day.
“Alright - tell me how it went,” I replied.
So we debriefed and broke it down - then got extremely clear on what he wanted to accomplish by the end of the week.
Every day before practice we got clear on what the focus was for the day, and every day after practice we reflected on the progress he made.
And here’s the game changer - I knew that every day, he was not going to get the end result that he wanted!
But we weren’t looking for that - instead, we were looking for daily enhancements from the day before so that we could take another step toward our goal by the end of the week.
And every day, up until Friday, he was leaving the day with the mentality of “Pro Bowlers chase corrections.”
And every day he took another step.
And guess what?!
Friday came around, and he dominated - he got the result!
When he texted me saying, “Bro, today it happened. I crushed it. Every single rep I dominated the man in front of me.”
I replied, “Reflect for me - were all those daily steps worth it?”
“Absolutely - without them I wouldn’t have made the tweaks I needed to make in order to get here,” he said.
The learning point we took from this: when you get to the next level, you need to make daily corrections and tweaks until you get what you want.
It’s not going to happen over night, and you’re not going to get the end result right away.
In fact, you shouldn’t!
Why?
Because you’re trying to master something - and when you try to master something it’s going to require you to make daily tweaks.
That’s all this is - your one goal should be to find all the challenges as quick as you can, and then correct them as quick as you can.
That’s how the best of the best do it.
And that’s how you need to do it.
